Campus security remains top priority for Polk State College

Polk State College joins institutions of learning across the nation in sharing condolences with the Florida State University community.
Administration and security officials continue to ensure safety and security are top priorities for the institution, with President Dr. Angela Garcia Falconetti reminding students, faculty, and staff of the resources available to them in the event of an emergency.
“I write to express my deepest sympathy to Florida State University (FSU) and all affected by the tragedy. The FSU community is vast and strong, and I know that many of you have FSU connections as alumni, parents, and more. My thoughts are with you…,” Dr. Falconetti wrote in an email to employees Friday.
Employee and Student Assistance Programs
Employees are urged to utilize the Employee Assistance Program administered by Acentra Health if needed. Students have access to the BayCare Student Assistance Program, which includes confidential support 24/7 by calling 800.878.5470 or accessing the online portal. Counselors are also available on the Winter Haven and Lakeland campuses. Students can schedule appointments by calling 863.669.2309.
Emergency Preparedness Plan
Polk State maintains a readily accessible Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) available on all College desktop computers and provides thorough instructions on how to respond to emergencies on campus, from dangerous weather to armed subjects. Faculty and staff members are also familiarized with the safety features of their classrooms and offices, which they are encouraged to share with students.
Emergency Notifications
Polk State utilizes mass communication tools to alert the College community in the event of an emergency through notifications to mobile phones via call and text, polk.edu, social media, and more.
Students and employees are urged to ensure that their information is up to date in Passport to receive emergency alerts from the College. Check that all contact information is current under the “My Details” or “Change Contact Info” link. Numbers entered in the “Cellular Number” field in the “Personal Information” section are used for emergency texts and phone messages.
College officials will continue to seek opportunities for strengthening Polk State’s security and safety measures.
“Additionally, we maintain a close partnership with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and I am grateful to our deputies who diligently serve our College,” Dr. Falconetti said.
